The Apple iPhone was launched in the UK today at their European flagship store on Regent Street and will be available on November 9th. Having read a lot of the hype before the US launch and subsequently heard of a lot of praise for the iPhone, I was quite interested in this release to see what deals us in Britain were going to receive.

Poor Choice Of Provider

It turns out that the rumours were true and O2 scored the, potentially very expensive, contract with Apple to provide the iPhone here which really disappointed me.

I used to be a happy O2 customer, perpetually pleased with my contract and handset. That was until recently when I came to the end of my contract and, when looking to renew, discovered that O2 had got stuck in the past. They were offering the same (or longer) contracts and there was no deals with the mobile internet, just a bit of poor advertising for their “walled garden” i-Mode service.

The only good thing that could come of O2 selling the iPhone, I thought as the rumours flew about, was dragging them into this millennium with regards to data plans. I was wrong.

The cheapest contract available with the O2 iPhone is for £35 a month and gets you 200 minutes, 200 texts and unlimited data over the O2 EDGE network (which will have only 30% UK coverage by the launch!).

Let’s compare this to the contract I signed with T-Mobile at the end of last year: for £27.50 a month I get up to 300 minutes or 600 texts, or whatever mix of the two, and unlimited use of T-Mobile’s 3G network for browsing the web. Add to that a Sony Ericsson K800i for no extra cost, as opposed to the iPhone for £269.

Not Much Of A Phone

The iPhone has a lovely user interface, touch screen, WiFi and 8GB of memory to store music, but what else is there? Allow me to compare with my current phone, the Sony Ericsson K800i (already superseded by it’s upgrade the K810i with the K850i hitting the shops in October).

• The iPhone has the advanced mobile Safari browser, which does all sorts of clever zooming in so that the mobile web can be as good as the one on your desktop.
• My K800i has Opera Mini, a fully featured mobile browser that has been around since before Apple even thought about making a phone. It is in version 3 at the moment but there is a beta test for version 4 (which includes all the zooming features too). Don’t forget that I’ll be accessing the internet quicker too, since my phone is on the 3G network.
• The iPhone has a 2 megapixel camera.
• The K800i has a 3.2 megapixel CyberShot camera.
• The iPhone has a map program.
• My K800i has Google Maps.
• The iPhone allows you to check your email.
• So does the K800i, but I also installed the specific GMail program which works even better.

The list goes on, but my phone has comparable, and sometimes better, features and it didn’t cost me £269 on top of the contract just so that I could turn it on its side and watch the screen do the same.

I’ll Be Waiting, Next Generation iPhone and Next Generation Contracts

The iPhone will be here in just under two months, but you won’t see me queuing at my local O2 store desperate to get my hands on this let down. I’m more interested in the upcoming Sony Ericsson W960i (touch screen, WiFi, 3G, 8GB storage, 3.2 megapixel camera… do you see where I’m going with this?). That’s not to say I’m ruling out an iPhone in the future, the second or third generation models will surely be gadgets to dribble over and perhaps Apple will open it up to more networks, but I’ll stick with what I know and can afford for the moment.
